I plan on getting a zippo lighter?

What do I need?

So far, I have ordered the lighter, a bottle of fluid, the flint, and what else do I need? Do I need wicks?
And how long does a wick last?

Hello there,

Congratulations on your purchase. If you take care of your Zippo it will last you a lifetime. I have some that I have had for decades. The Zippo will come with a flint and wick installed. If you bought the Zippo on-line and it is shipped through the mail, there will be no fluid in it. If you bought it from a tobacco shop, they probably filled it. Other stores don't. So when you get your Zippo all you need to do is fill it. Here is how.

Open the lid and you will see a lever on the hinge side. Flip that lever up; it releases the tension on the works. Now the works will pull up easily. Turn the works upside down. There will be a felt pad on the bottom. Lid one side of the pad and squirt in some fluid. The cotton batting will absorb the fluid. So repeat the process. When the cotton batting absorbs the fluid slowly, stop filling it. You will not harm the Zippo if you overfill it, but it will be messy to carry. The excess fluid seeps out of the lighter in your pocket. The lighter fluid can irritate your skin when it soaks through your pocket. Now put the works back in the case and flip the lever back down. You are ready to go.

Flints do wear out. How long one lasts bepends on how much you use your Zippo. Even with heavy use, I would expect the flint to last more than a month. Wicks last a long time. If you pull the wick up to get a high torch-like flame, the wick will burn out fast. Anytime you touch the wick, some of it will crumble away. If you do not handle the wick, it will last for years. I have Zippos that are 10 years or older still with the original wick. So, buy the replacement wicks only when you need them. They are easy to find and are cheap. But no sense storing a package of wicks for a few years until you need them.

A Zippo is built tough. Under normal use it will last for decades. A Zippo can withstand a lot of abuse. I have a Zippo that was in my office when the building burned down. There was a gas explosion that must has sent the Zippo flying because I found it about 50 feet from where it had been sitting on my desk. Everything in the office was destroyed, except the Zippo. It has a black crud on it. I scraped that off. Got a new felt pad from Zippo and they told me how to repat the cotton batting. Put a flint in it, the old one was turned to powder from the heat of the fire. Pulled some of the original wick back up. The Zippo still works. It survived a fire and explosion. Not many things built that well.
