Deictic expressions in spontaneous speech??
These are expressions that cannot be understood unless the context of the conversation is known e.g. 'i' 'mine' 'you'
i am currently writing an essay into the realism of soap opera speech. one of the features of spontaneous speech is the use of deictic expressions. I have found it is used alot in soap opera scripts (obviously!)
My question is why is this?- with regards to soap operas. I hope i've been clear enough
Perhaps it's because "deictic expressions only acquire meaning when interpreted by the hearer. Deictic expressions are slots, place-holders for
referring expressions which in turn are provided by the context, that is by the situation, previous discourse, etc. Deixis uses the speaker's setting of reference: the distinctions here/there; this/that; these/those rely on the proximity to the speaker."
So, in soap operas, they are putting the viewer in the position of someone who is present in the room with the speaker. Sort of like the "fly on the wall" who is overhearing these conversations and understands their context because they have been privy to everything that went on before.
