Do I bring Mexican food to an American's funeral if mostly Mexicans are going?
The manager of the restaurant I worked at has died, and since his funeral will be with his family in his hometown, we're having a memorial at 8 am next week at the restaurant before it opens. The owner and new manager are organizing this and putting money towards flowers and candles, but their plans for food are just for everyone to bring food if they want. I'm thinking that's really informal and unorganized, so I want to volunteer to be responsible for food. But I figure I should have a plan first. I'm thinking coffee, orange juice, muffins, coffee cake, and a fresh fruit platter would be appropriate and not too difficult for 30-40 people. But only about 5 of us are white and the rest are Mexican. Would it be appropriate to include conchas and chorizo mini quiches to the set up?
I also thought it would be nice to perform "Amazing Grace" and "I Will Remember You" on the guitar, and since many aren't fluent English speakers, should I sing a few verses in Spanish?
I would think that you should try to serve the food that the person who died would have liked.
This sounds kinda crazy, but don't try to accommodate the visitors too much, instead try to accommodate the person who passed (as if he were still alive).
As for singing Amazing grace in Spanish, it depends on if the person who died would appreciate that.
