need help with algebra?
Soybean meal is 18% protein; cornmeal is 9% protein. How many pounds of each should be mixed together in order to get 360lb mixture that is 16% protein?
cornmeal=?lbs
soy bean=?lbs
Suppose we need x pounds of soybean and y pounds of cornmeal.
18% x + 9%y = 16% (x+y) = 360
18/100 x + 9/100 y = 16/100 (x+y) = 360
18x + 9y = 16(x+y) = 36000
From 18x + 9y = 16(x+y), we get 2x = 7y, so 18x = 63y. Substitute 18x = 63y to the equation 18x+9y=36000:
63y + 9y = 36000
72y = 36000
y = 500
2x = 7y = 3500
x=1750
So, cornmeal = 500 lbs, soybean = 1750 lbs.
