Would it be possible to use a household fire to expand the glass to reshape a glass pop bottle?
Sitting out by the campfire tonight, my friends and I were struck with curiosity. If we held the bottom of a glass bottle (An Izze bottle to be specific) in the heart of a fire, would the temperature suffice to expand the glass enough for us to reshape it? In simpler terms, could we, in theory, blow glass in our own backyard?
You won't be able to do blow glass easily with normal household fire sources. You'll need a good propane or butane powered torch that can make a sharp flame cone to reshape bottles of the thickness you are speaking of.
I did exactly what you did last time I went camping. We were throwing random objects into the flame and we noticed that the core of the burning amber was hot enough to melt an aluminum can in seconds. So we threw in a bottle and let it sit there but didn't melt at all. We even buried the bottle in the mound of hot amber and let it cook overnight but it just got warped a little and that was it.
To shape glass you need blue or white flame which burn much hotter than red or yellow flames like the ones from a campfire. You may be able to achieve glass molding with a gas stove but only if the glass is relatively thin.
